Streetwear and urban fashion have incorporated hip hop culture’s loose pants, shoes, and graphic tees. This varied from prior hip hop themes, which largely focused on party music. Musicians such as Public Enemy and KRS-One contributed a political and social consciousness to the genre, addressing racism, police brutality, and poverty. Evolution and Mainstream SuccessĪround the middle of the 1980s, hip hop music began to diversify. Hip hop starting gaining national attention in large part thanks to artists such as Run-DMC, LL Cool J, and the Beastie Boys. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s 1982 smash single “The Message” was one of the first socially conscious hip hop tracks.Īs hip hop music grew in popularity, it began to spread into other American cities. He invented techniques for cutting and scratching vinyl. Grandmaster Flash, another early hip hop figure, was one of the first DJs to use turntables as an instrument. You can hear in mumble rap how the flow sounds very similar but has been extremely distorted and messed up, because of the lack of talent these artists have. But the Memphis rappers were lyrical geniuses and could rap faster than anyone in rap history. The sound, flow, and beats of trap that you know today, came from this genre, just compare songs! The Migos obviously took its flow from lord infamous and Tommy Wright. Two of Three Six Mafias members, Dj Paul and Lord infamous were very influential in the development of the genre and its sound and flow. These are some of the Early Artists and Groups that pioneered the Memphis sound: Tommy Wright III, Project Pat, Gangsta Pat, La Chat, T-rock, Princess loco, playa fly, and the most known group Three Six Mafia. The dominance of the NY and LA hip hop scene caused southern rappers to create this new sub-genre of music, this new flow and style. But many people didn’t sample and created their own sounds and beats. The songs in the sub-genre usually had a double-time flow and took samples from horror movies and classical/soul music. Southern rap, and specifically Memphis rap was very much pioneering this new sound and flow, characterized by cheap budget, repetitive production, minimal synth melodies. The lyrics were much darker and more violent than mainstream rap, and made the nwa look like nothing. These new MCs and DJs were pioneering new flows, beats, and lyrics. Underground gangsta rap and horrorcore rap was being pioneered by DJs and rappers all over the country, but most famously in the south. In the late 80s and early 90s, new sub-genres of rap were appearing from everywhere in the country, because of the emergence of gangsta rap. So we all know what mumble rap is and we know the trap beat and flow.
